Leading on from the earlier discussion of ad blindeness in forums, I read in an another article on the googleadsense.biz website that the same principle of regularly moving ads within a forum (from day to day) has other implications for web design.
In particular, you can radomize the placement of ads on each and every page on your site. If you do this, then, as a visitor goes from page to page on your site, they will be confronted with ads in continually new positions. This should better grab their attention. However it might also drive them crazy and they may leave your site in disgust if you go overboard!
To use such a technique in a non-annoying manner, you might go about it as follows:
1) Consider the natural path of movement of visitors thru the site
2) Identify a key pathway to experiment on (e.g. homepage, then directory page, then sub-directory etc)
3) Consider where to place ads on those "pathway" pages. You might for example have ads on the right on the homepage, ads on the left for the directory page, and then an inline ad for the sub-directory page. It is important that there is some rationale for the ever changing ad placement or you will ANNOY YOUR VISITORS!
I will try this technique out myself and let you know if it helps me to increase my click thru rate (without damaging the user experience).
Cheers, Glen
